Abstract

The study, Evaluation of Management by Objectives Adoption by Family Owned Businesses in Enugu Metropolis, was set to achieve the following objectives: determine the extent to which classification of organizational role is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis; evaluate the extent to which joint setting of objectives is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis and ascertain the extent to which relating goals with resources is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis . Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted in the study while questionnaire was used as instrument. The study had a population size of 600. Through Taro Yamane, a sample size of 240 emerged. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency tables and the values expressed in percentages. Z – test at 5% level of significance was used for testing the hypotheses. The study revealed that the extent to which classification of organizational role is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis is significantly high, Z (95,n = 211), 6.075 < 8.812 = p. < 0.05. The extent to which joint setting of objectives is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis is significantly high, Z (95,n = 211), 5.456 < 6.764 = p. < 0.05 and the extent to which relating goals with resources is adopted by family owned businesses in Enugu Metropolis is significantly high, Z (95,n = 211), 6.144 < 8.278 = p. < 0.05. The study concluded that Management by Objective was discovered in this work as having a significant positive relationship with family owned businesses, as well as it's process, that is, participative decision making, performance appraisal and performance feedback, has a positive relationship with family owned businesses. The study therefore recommended among others that Participative Decision Making should be encouraged in the organization.
