IMPLEMENTING SCHOOL BASED MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE POLICY (SBMC) IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Education is now globally seen as a responsibility of all, government and individuals alike for effectiveness and efficiency to be achieved. SBMC policy is considered a strategic education policy in Nigeria that can boast achievement of national development since quality education is adjudged the greatest instrument for achieving national development. The government took a bold step to create the School Based Management Committee (SBMC), a group of people drawn from a community to care for schools in the community and assist principals run the school administration for effectiveness. Based on the key objectives of the secondary education in Nigeria, this paper argues that the effective implementation of the SBMC policy across secondary schools in Nigeria will ensure the achievement of the secondary school objectives which will in return contribute positively to the country’s national development. Since policy implementation has always been a great challenge to the nation’s education system, the paper recommends among others that SBMC should be given a priority by State governments, Local governments and the school principals to bring about national development
