The effect of climate change has been on the increase in Nigeria in recent years. In coastal communities of the Niger Delta area which is a hub of oil and gas exploration, this climate anomaly is aggravating the existing physical, environmental, socio-economic and health structure of the ever-increasing population. This trend may be attributed to the increase in human activities around the coastal areas, urbanization, resource development and exploitation inclusive of the combination of other unfriendly environmental events that enhances erosion and global warming. Despite these observed changes which are largely perceived as critical environmental problems, most especially around the urban areas, little attempts have been made at a comprehensive study of the spatial scope, nature and magnitude of such coastal area changes. In the Lagos segment for instance, coastal changes along the built-up areas are widely reported, however the changes along the Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Calabar sections are hardly reported or assessed regardless of their environmental implications. This disposition has increased the unfamiliarity of climate change in the Niger Delta, hence the unpreparedness of both inhabitants and policy makers to enable a viable mitigative and adaptative approaches. This study demonstrates the use of Geospatial techniques (GIS, Remote sensing and Photogrammetric) in assessment of coastal and shoreline changes in Bonny segment of the Nigerian coast. This study used landsat-5, sentinel-2 satellite imageries of 2000-2013, 2013-2018 2018-2023 to generate land use and land cover for different time periods using GlS overlay and topological techniques. The shoreline changes observed in the urban fringe shows a wider spatial coverage than those of the adjacent built-up areas during the study period. The changes range from coastal accretion, erosion and loss of land due to uncontrolled sand mining. The implication of changes on the ecological and socio-economic activities in the area was also discussed in this paper.
