Abstract

The study determined the principals’ managerial behaviour as a correlate for teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Enugu State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Correlational survey research design was adopted for this study. The population for the study was 2,177 respondents which comprised 31 principals and 2,146 teachers in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State. The sample for this study was 138. In that regards, the researcher made use of all the 31 principals because the population was manageable as well as 107 teachers which was 5% of the teachers’ population. The instrument for data collection was a researcher developed structured questionnaire titled “Relationship between Principals Management Behaviour and Teacher’ Job Performance Questionnaire (RPMBTJPQ)”. The questionnaire was validated by three research experts in which two were from Department of Educational Management and one from Measurement and Evaluation Unit of Department of Mathematics and Computer Education, all from Faculty of Education, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu. To ascertain the internal consistency of the questionnaire, the researcher made use of Cronbach Alpha method. The computation yielded 0.80 for cluster A and 0.82 for cluster B. The questionnaire had an overall reliability index of 0.81 which indicated that the instrument was reliable and, therefore, considered appropriate for data collection for this study. The researcher used Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient in answering the two research questions. Hypotheses were tested using linear regression analysis at 0.05 level of significant. The findings of the study revealed that there is a high correlation between principals’ motivational behaviour and teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Enugu State. Further finding revealed that the researcher rejected the null hypothesis and concluded that the relationship between principals’ motivational behaviour and teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Enugu State is statistically significant. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommended that principals should keep motivating teachers in order to enhance their job performance. This can be done by rewarding, praising and supporting them in times of need in order to enhance their job performance. Also, principals should maintain good leadership behaviour in the secondary schools in order to enhance teachers’ job performance.
