Abstract

Good health is considered vital for any community, since a population's health has a direct impact on its ability to work productively and efficiently. This paper utilized a geospatial approach to assess the distribution and accessibility of healthcare facilities in Ngala Local Government Area, Borno State. The Local Government is one of the areas highly impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency in the state therefore such kind studies are critical important. Data were obtained from primary and secondary sources. Kobo Toolbox and a Global Positioning System (GPS) were used to obtain the primary data. Kobo Toolbox is an open-source mobile data collection tool that was used to collect the attribute data of health facilities, and the GPS was used to capture the coordinates. The collected data were analyzed using Excel, ArcGIS 10.7, and QGIS. The analysis of the average nearest neighbor was performed using the Spatial Analyst tool In ArcGIS 10.7 to depict the distribution pattern of the health facilities. The results show that the distribution pattern of health facilities is random. The results reveal that the majority of health facilities are owned by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Over 69% of the health facilities rendered completely free services and provided drugs. The results further revealed that the operating hours of health facilities are limited in most of the health facilities and the majority of healthcare facilities are concentrated in the IDPs camp. This is because majority of the facilities are owned by NGOs and rendered humanitarian services to the IDPs. In view of the above findings, the study recommends that more healthcare facilities should be provided by the government, as NGO health facilities are not permanent
