ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AMONG THE RESIDENTS OF PORT HARCOURT METROPOLIS

Abstract

This study investigated the attitude and practices of solid waste management among the residents of Port Harcourt metropolis. Descriptive survey design was adopted and a population that consisted of one million, eight hundred and sixty-five persons (1,865,000) was used. Simple random sampling was employed to select the sample size for the study, which was four hundred and forty (440) respondents. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Analytical tools such as percentage, mean, one-way analysis of variance and chi-square at 0.05 alpha level were employed. The findings of this study showed that, the residents had positive attitude towards solid waste management (3.19±1.32). Furthermore, the result also revealed that, the residents of the study area had good practice of solid waste with 197(48.9%) who stored their waste using waste bins. There was a significant difference between socioeconomic status [F=3.53, p=0.01], age [F=8.93, p=0.00] and their attitude towards solid waste management. In addition, there was a significant relationship between age [X2 = 4.27, df= 3, p= 0.23], educational level [X2 = 15.97, df= 3, p= 0.00] and practice of solid waste management. The study concluded that the residents of Port Harcourt metropolis had positive attitude and good practices of solid waste management. Based on these, recommendation was proffered to improve the practice of solid waste management

Community leaders and health workers should encourage community participation and involvement of the residents in sanitation programs in order to enhance their sense of responsibility to their health and environment.
