RESIDENTS’ PERCEPTION AND SATISFACTION WITH PUBLIC HOUSING DELIVERY IN PORT HARCOURT.

Abstract

Housing is amongst the basic needs of humans. The study investigated the perception and satisfaction of residents with public housing delivery in Port Harcourt metropolis. The study design adopted for this study was the survey research design. The study analyzed data from primary and secondary sources. A sample size of 400 residents derived from the Taro Yamane formular was deployed for this study. Results revealed that 50 respondents representing 12.5% of the total population were very satisfied with the building type, 80 respondents representing 20.0% of the total population were satisfied, 150 respondents representing 37.5% of the total population were dissatisfied and 120 respondents representing 30.0% of the total population were very dissatisfied with the building type. Results also reveal that 86 respondents representing 21.5% of the total population were very satisfied with the aesthetic appearance of the building, 98 respondents representing 24.5% of the total population were satisfied, 95 respondents representing 23.7% of the total population were dissatisfied and 121 respondents representing 30.3% of the total population were very dissatisfied with the aesthetic appearance of the building. Further questionnaire analysis revealed that limited access to finance, high cost of building materials, inadequate urban planning, lack of infrastructure and regulatory bottlenecks were the barrier to the provision of affordable public housing in Port Harcourt metropolis. The study recommended that essential infrastructure and amenities should be put in place in building construction
