UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF TEACHERS’ COMPTENTENCY IN MANAGING INSTRUCTIONS ON AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION: IMPLICATION FOR TERTIARY INSTITUTION LECTURERS IN NIGERIA

This paper is on undergraduate students’ perception of teachers’ competency in managing instructions on agricultural education: Implication for tertiary institution lecturers in Nigeria. The research work used descriptive survey design with a population of 180 students and a sample size of 60 derived by stratified proportionate sampling technique. The study was guided by two research questions and one hypothesis. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionaire by the researchers with 13 items measured on a modified 4-point likert scale. The instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability coefficient of the instrument 0.86 was calculated using cronbach-alpha. Data analysis was done using mean and standard deviation for answering the research question and the hypothesis tested using t-test. The findings revealed that teacher quality increased students interest and learning capacity, competency in use of instructional materials encouraged effectiveness and efficiency, when a teacher is an inspirer his students do not miss classes and that the level of knowledge and skills possessed by a teacher is not a function of gender. Therefore, the paper recommends that tertiary institution lecturers should give their all to make their students functional and better members in the society, tertiary institution teachers should maximize use of instructional materials to be able to conserve energy in teaching, the teachers should develop themselves to become inspirers to their students, tertiary institution teachers should maximize all conferences, workshop trainings and seminar opportunities for personal and professional development, regular in-house trainings be made available to up-coming tertiary institution teachers for them to function better
