PREVALENCE AND SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC CORRELATES OF SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION AMONG PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS IN FEDERAL NEUROPSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL YABA.

This study investigated the prevalence and socio-demographic correlates of sexual dysfunction among psychiatric patients in the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba The study adopted an ex-post facto research design which utilized a cross-sectional survey method to gather data. A total of two hundred and eighty-two (282) outpatients at Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos were selected using the Purposive sampling technique. The study sample was made up of 132(47.5%) males and 148(52.5%) females a with a mean age of 36.97 S.D 11.49. The results also revealed that there is a prevalence rate of about 25.9% of sexual dysfunction among the participants sampled. In addition, there was a significant relationship between demographic variables: age (X2 = 6.62, df = 2, p .05), gender (X2 = 5.12, df = 1, p .05), marital status (X2 = 85.94, df = 4, p .01) and sexual dysfunction. Also, clinical variables: history of diabetes (X2 = 11.74, df = 1, p .05), history of hypertension (X2 = 5.55, df = 1, p .05), history of prostate cancer (X2 = 12.47, df = 1, p .01) History of Myocardial infection (X2 = 8.09, df = 1, p.05), Mastectomy (X2 = 4.93, df = 1, p.05), Psychiatric diagnosis (X2 = 16.98, df = 3, p.05), Sexual dysfunction (X2 = 8.88, df = 1, p.05), and sexual dysfunction However, there was no significant relationship between the history of prostate surgeries (X2 = 1.38, df = 1, p .05), history of renal failure (X2 = 0.14, df = 1, p .05), history of pelvic infection (X2 = 0.53, df = 1, p .05) and sexual dysfunction (X2 = 0.53, df = 1, p .05). The study, thus, recommended that routine assessment of sexual dysfunction should be carried out in the clinical management of psychiatric patients as this will further promote robust and comprehensive management for patients in the hospital.
