Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of diabetes and associated comorbidities among patients attending Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Methodology: A hospital-based cross sectional survey design was adopted for the study. A 2-year retrospective study of all cases of diabetes managed at the tertiary hospitals in Port Harcourt metropolis was conducted. The population of 15,000 diabetes mellitus patients attended healthcare facilities which were Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, from 2022 to 2023. The instrument for collecting data for this study was self-structured proforma titled Prevalence and Comorbidities Diabetes among Patients attending Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Data collected for this study was analyzed using Statistical Products for Service Solution (SPSS) version 25.0. Results: The result showed that 44(10.7%) of the respondents were diabetic, 251(61.2%) were prediabetic and 115(28.0%) had no diabetes. The results showed that 84(20.5%) of the respondents indicated that they had blood pressure as comorbidities, 104(25.4%) indicated arthritis, 37(9.0%) indicated stroke and 185(45.1%) reported no comorbidity. Conclusion and Recommendation: this study concluded that the prevalence of diabetes was high among men. This study also reported stroke, arthritis and high blood pressure as comorbidities associated of diabetes. It was recommended that Government should focus on social support for positive behavioural changes and motivation play a central role in diabetes control among population. This in turn would improve health lifestyles such as inculcating physical activity, and dietary regulation among others.
