THE IMPACT OF AI ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECT MANAGERS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON MULTINATIONAL CORPORATION PERFORMANCE

This study investigated the impact of AI on information technology project managers among multinational firms in Nigeria. The study also examined the influence of AI on multinational corporation. These were with the view to assess the perception and adoption of AI by Nigeria project managers likewise challenges associated with AI adoption in Nigeria. The study adopted qualitative approach specifically phenomenological design. The study also made use of purposive sampling to select 18- IT project managers from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Chevron Oil and Gas, MTN telecommunication. Fous Group Discussion (FGD) was also used to collect data which was subjected to thematic analysis. The result indicated four key themes were identified: perception and adoption of AI, AI’s impact on firm performance, its influence on IT project managers' responsibilities, and the challenges associated with AI adoption. The findings reveal a dichotomy in the perception and adoption of AI among IT project managers, with younger managers embracing AI for its transformative potential, while older managers express concerns over costs, job displacement, and reliability. AI's impact on multinational firms is significant, enhancing decision-making, operational efficiency, customer experience, security, and cost reduction, particularly in the petroleum and telecommunications sectors. Furthermore, AI influences IT project management by providing data-driven insights, automating tasks, improving resource management, and enhancing communication and collaboration. However, the adoption of AI in Nigeria faces challenges such as infrastructure limitations, skills gaps, high costs, data privacy concerns, and cultural resistance. The study underscores the need for strategic investments and policy frameworks to overcome these barriers and fully leverage AI's potential in Nigeria.
