Keywords:

The rate of suicide in Nigeria, and more especially among the undergraduate students is quite on the increase. The numerous efforts and strategies by the Federal Government, and other agencies to help eradicate suicide seem not to have yielded much result. The main purpose of this study is therefore to examine Character-Building: an antidote or remedy for suicidal ideation among the undergraduate students of university of Nigeria, Nsukka. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study compromised of all undergraduate students in University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The sample of the study comprised of four hundred (400) year three students selected using a multi-stage procedure. A self-structured 4-point rating scale questionnaire titled Character-Building and Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (CBSIQ) was used to elicit responses from the respondents. The instrument was face validated by three experts. The following reliability coefficients were established for the various clusters of the instrument using Cronbach alpha estimate, namely, Cluster A (0.73), Cluster B (0.64) Cluster C (0.69), Cluster D (0.67) and Cluster E (0.76), while a reliability coefficient of 0.70 was obtained for the entire test items. Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to analyze the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significant. The research finding revealed that character-building (i.e., resilience, integrity, contentment, self-control and courage) helps in curtailing suicidal ideation to a high extent. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that professional counsellors through seminars, workshops, and counselling services should enlighten the general public on the importance of building or strengthening those character traits capable of helping the students in managing intense negative emotions
