EFFECT OF DISCUSSION SUPPLEMENTED WITH MUSIC TEACHING METHOD ON THE INTEREST OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN BASIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN AKWA IBOM STATE

This study was designed to investigate the effect of discussion supplemented with music on the interest of primary school pupils in Basic Science and Technology in Akwa Ibom State. The study adopted pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design involving two groups (the experimental group (E) and the control group (C)). Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study was 5000 primary six Basic Science and Technology and Technology pupils in all the primary schools and the sample for the study consisted of eighty four (84) pupils drawn from two of the schools in Etinan Educational Zone of Akwa-Ibom State. The instrument for data collection was the Basic Science and Technology Interest Inventory scale. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Result revealed that there is an improvement in the mean interest scores of the primary pupils in Basic Science and Technology when taught using discussion supplemented with music teaching strategy than the discussion method. The male students developed better interest in Basic Science and Technology than their female counterparts when taught using discussion supplemented with music teaching strategy than. Recommendations were made which include among others that teachers should be taught how to utilize the discussions method supplemented with music teaching strategy in the teaching and learning process of Basic Science and Technology since it has been found to improve the interest of pupils in Basic Science and Technology
