Abstract

This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and influencing factors concerning sexual and reproductive health (SRH) among hearing-impaired individuals in Kogi State, Nigeria. Recognizing the critical need for effective SRH education tailored to marginalized groups, the objective is to assess the level of SRH knowledge and the prevailing attitudes towards SRH practices in this population. Using a multistage sampling procedure, 270 hearing-impaired participants were selected from three Local Government Areas (LGAs), and data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal that while participants demonstrated a basic understanding of reproductive health concepts, significant misconceptions persisted, particularly regarding menstruation and circumcision. Attitudes towards family planning showed a tendency towards acceptance; however, cultural stigma surrounding contraceptive use was identified as a notable barrier. Various external factors impacting SRH practices were also recognized, including communication barriers, cultural restrictions, and inadequate access to appropriate health resources. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity for culturally sensitive and accessible educational interventions aimed specifically at individuals with hearing impairments. Recommendations include developing tailored educational materials, training healthcare professionals in accessible communication methods, and initiating community engagement to foster open discussions about SRH matters. Addressing these gaps is crucial for enhancing the sexual and reproductive health outcomes of hearing-impaired individuals in Nigeria
