GOVERNMENT SPENDING POLICIES AND PERFORMANCE OF PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES IN SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA

The study aimed at investigating the government spending policies and performance of pharmaceutical companies in South-East Nigeria. The specific objectives were; To determine the effect of government spending on health on the performance of pharmaceutical companies in South-East Nigeria. To examine the effect of government spending on infrastructure on the performance of pharmaceutical companies in South-East Nigeria. The research work was anchored on Public Choice Theory. Survey research design was adopted. The researcher made use of primary and secondary sources of data. Stratified sampling method was adopted in selecting thirty pharmaceutical firms in this study due to the large number of pharmaceutical firms in South-East, Nigeria and the population drawn is 1881. Through Borg and Gall (1973) sample size of 361 was derived. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis method was used in testing the hypotheses. The result of the hypotheses showed that. Government spending on health has significant positive effect on quality assurance of pharmaceutical companies in South-East Nigeria. Government spending on infrastructure has significant positive effect on cost-effectiveness of Pharmaceutical industries in South-East, Nigeria. The study concluded that that government spending policies has significant positive effect on performance of pharmaceutical industries in South-East, Nigeria. The study recommended that Governments may implement structural reforms, such as privatization or deregulation, to improve the efficiency and productivity of the economy, leading to higher growth rates over the long term
