Abstract

This study investigated the competences required by farmers for watermelon production in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State. The study has three objectives and research questions with a population of 200 watermelon farmers and extension agents. Survey design was adopted for this study as a method of research design. The sample size of 100 was determined using percentage. Instrument for data collection was questionnaire while data collected was summarize and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The result of the research shows that all the skill mention are required by watermelon farmers in Makurdi Local Government of Benue State, therefore, it was recommended that; agricultural extension officers in the ministry of agriculture should use the identify work skills in the study area to guide the farmers to become members of farmers club for successful entry or practice of watermelon production, the government of Benue state and the Makurdi local government representives should task curriculum planners to integrate the skill identified by this study into the state skill acquisition training programme for youth and adult in watermelon production.
