APPRAISAL OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS’ SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT STATUS IN EZEAGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE NIGERIA

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to appraise the social development status of secondary school adolescents in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu state Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design guided by four research question and four hypotheses. It was carried out in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu state. Sample for the study was 578 teachers comprising 317 urban and 261 rural teachers drawn using proportionate sampling technique. A 30-item questionnaire was used to collect data in the study. The questionnaire was validated by three research experts. It yielded a reliability coefficient of .69 obtained through Cronbach’s Alpha method. Data collected were analyzed using mean with standard deviation to answer research questions and z-test statistic to test the hypotheses. The result showed that on a valid social development measuring scale, the status of urban secondary schools’ adolescents in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu state Nigeria was Average while the status of their counterparts in rural secondary schools was below Average. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that capacity building trainings on social development should be organized from time to time for all persons involved in training adolescents.

THE DYNAMICS OF UTILIZATION OF FAMILY PLANNING TECHNIQUES IN UDI AREA OF ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract: The Dynamics of the utilization of family planning techniques in Udi area of Enugu state formed the basis and the driving force for this work. Data were gathered through survey design from a sample of 240 women spread across the five districts of the study area. The major data for the work were however gathered from clinic registers of 2 cottage hospitals and 2 health centres located in four districts in the area namely: Okpatu, Egede, Ngwo and Ohum Data were presented in tabular form and then simultaneously described and discussed. The result showed that there is variation over time and space in contraceptive usage however the trend over time indicates an increasing level of usage while spatial differences in utilization is fast disappearing. The age group 22-27 has the highest concentration of contraceptive usage-being the most active child bearing age seeking child spacing through fertility regulation and control. One of the recommendations of note is that more clinics should be built by both public and private concerns to improve accessibility for women seeking fertility regulation and control. This will result to enhanced health and economy of such households

PROBLEMS AND IMPROVEMENT MODEL OF TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT METHOD USED IN NIGERIAN POLYTECHNICS

Abstract: The assessment of higher order learning (HOL) outcomes such as critical thinking, problem solving and creativity has been a problem to Nigerian Polytechnics. Although proper integration of components of assessment have the potential to assess the higher order learning outcomes, dependence on the traditional assessment method oppose it. This paper presents a study conducted in 2018 to investigate the problems of the traditional assessment method for Nigerian Polytechnics and to determine assessment model for its improvement. Data for the study were collected from 168 lecturers from five Federal Polytechnics in both Southern and Northern parts of the country. Pre-designed self-administered questionnaire was used for primary data collection from the lecturers. The study results showed that the traditional essay type examination is unsuitable, assignments are unreliable and quizzes are unsuitable for a corresponding percentage of 61.90%, 90.48% and 53.57%.  The results also showed that 76.11% of the respondents agreed that the proposed assessment improvement model consisting of examination, assignments and quizzes requiring evaluation, analysis and creation of new solutions and capstone project for core courses assesses creativity, 70.23% agreed that it assesses solving of problems and 73.80% agreed that the method assesses critical thinking. It was recommended that more researches be conducted in this area to explore the impact of the proposed assessment method for Nigerian polytechnics.  

STAKEHOLDERS’ CONTRIBUTIONS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN ABA EDUCATION ZONE OF ABIA STATE

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine stakeholders’ contributions on the development of technical colleges in Aba Education Zone of Abia State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and was guided by two research questions and two corresponding null hypotheses. The study was carried out in the technical colleges in Aba Education zone of Abia State specifically in BTC Faulks’ Road-Aba, BTC Uratta and FSTC-Ohanso with a population of 58 respondents which was made up of 47 male and 11 female technical college teachers sampled purposively. The instrument used for data collection was a structured four-point scale questionnaire titled “Stakeholders’ Contributions on the Development of Technical College Questionnaire” (SCDTCQ) with a 20-items statement developed by the researcher and validated by research experts with the reliability index of 0.78 established using Cronbach’s Alpha because the instrument has multiple options. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance and appropriate degree of freedom using t-test. The findings of the study among others revealed that parents contribute immeasurably on the development of technical colleges in Aba Education Zone of Abia State as they are involved in raising fund for school, promoting class activities. The study therefore recommends among others that stakeholders should be acknowledged and made active as their contributions cannot be under-estimated and education and its related issues should not be politicized unnecessarily.
