SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW ON CHALLENGES FACING RESEARCH DATA SHARING IN ACADEMICS

Background: Research nowadays is little bit concentrated on data and emphasized on collaboration as compare to the earlier once; it is significant to conduct systematic literature review on data sharing practices among academics. Despite the commitment of various agencies to research data sharing, it still poses challenge in reality. So far, no systematic review has been conducted for data sharing among Nigerian academics. Absent of systematic review on these challenges had provided inadequate chances to make best use of the importance of research data sharing. Methods: This review is conducted about the challenges facing research data sharing. Series of documents that described challenges, problems or barriers to data sharing in academics remained suitable for enclosure and studied freely by the authors. Numerous online databases were consulted, under the following search phase: research data sharing, data sharing and academic data sharing. Those neglected are papers that failed to pronounce a genuine research data sharing barriers were excluded. Finally, 166 articles stayed suitable, 68 remained relevant regarding this particular review. Results: Barriers for research data sharing were identified and categorized under ethics & privacy, technical, legal, individual, social & economic barriers. Altogether are described to be realistic to academic communities. Implications: The identified barriers as a matter of fact, barriers should be an eye opener to researchers to be able to tackle them at the same time encourages participation in data sharing practices among academics. Originality/value: This work happened to be the first to carry out an organized literature review on the challenges to academics’ data sharing and tenders the various references of carefully chosen papers and categorizing additional papers.
