ANTECEDENTS AND COROLLARIES OF RESTIVENESS AMONG ADOLESCENTS, AS PERCEIVED BY GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS IN AWKA EDUCATION ZONE, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA

The study determined the Antecedents and Corollaries of Restiveness among adolescents as Perceived by Guidance Counsellors in Awka Education Zone. Two research questions were formulated for the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The study was validated by two research experts. The population of the study was 63 guidance counsellors in the zone. There was no need for sampling, owing to the size of the population. Thus the entire population was used for the study. The researchers developed a questionnaire captioned Antecedents and Corollaries of Restiveness Questionnaire (CCRQ), which was used to collect data. The analysis was done using mean scores. The findings of the study revealed among others that poverty, unemployment, lack of infrastructure, slow approach of government, corruption, bad governance inadequate communication and information flow, youth exuberance, unfaithful implementation of life affecting programs and poor leadership styles as the antecedents of adolescents’ restiveness. On the hand the corollaries of restiveness in the perception of the respondents were among others that it exposes the young adults to indulge in armed robbery, putting innocent masses on hostage, by taking and abducting them, loss of lives and properties, communal clashes and invariably low human capital development and hence societal normlessness, resulting to insecurity. Based on the findings of the study recommendations were made which, include among others that adolescents should be trained to understand that it is better to resort to the use of dialogue rather than reckless destruction of lives and properties, especially when aggrieved or dissatisfied with the government
