Abstract

: The study examined the utilization of management information system (MIS) by principals for effective secondary school administration in Enugu State. Four research questions and four null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised 291 principals in the 291 public secondary schools in Enugu State. All the 291 principals were used because the population size was manageable. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection made up of 40 items. The instrument was validated by three experts and Cronbach Alpha statistics was sued in determining the internal consistency of the instrument. A reliability coefficients of 0.81, 0.83, 0.80, 0.86 and 0.84 were obtained for clusters 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively and the overall coefficient of the entire instrument was 0.83. Out of the 291 copies of the instrument distributed, 283 were recovered showing a return rate of 97%.  Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the null hypotheses. The study found out among others that principals utilize management information system for effective students’ personnel administration to a low extent while using it for effective staff personnel administration on secondary schools to a higher extent. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the State Ministry of Education should organize annual capacity building programme in form of in-service training and study leave with pay for principals to up-date their skills and knowledge of utilization of management information system for effective students’ personnel administration.
