The study determined the effect of audio-visual instructional compendium on students’ academic achievement in electrical installation and maintenance works in Technical Colleges in Rivers State. Specifically, the study examined the effect of audio-visual instructional compendium on students’ academic achievement in basic electricity and cable jointing in Technical Colleges in Rivers State. The study had two objectives, research questions and hypotheses which guided the study. The design of this study is a quasi-experimental. The population for the study comprised 95 National Technical Certificate (NTC) II electrical installation and maintenance works students. Simple random sampling technique was used to select two technical colleges out of the four technical colleges in Rivers State. The instrument, lesson plans and the Table of specification/Test Blue Print were subjected to face and content validation by three experts. The instrument used for the study is Electrical Installation Works Achievement Test (EIWAT). The reliability co-efficient of EIWAT was determined using Kuder Richardson formula 21 (KR-21). Which yielded a reliability index of 0.95. The findings of Research Question 1 revealed that students taught Basic Electricity using Audio-Visual Instructional compendium performed better than those taught Basic Electricity using charts aids and the findings of Research Question 2 showed that the group taught Cable Jointing using Audio-Visual Instructional compendium performed better than those taught Cable Jointing using charts aids. Based on the findings of the study the following recommendations were made Government should provide technical colleges with audio and visual technology devices for instructional activities to promote learning on basic electricity and Technical college administrators should ensure adequate maintenance of the few available audio/visual technology devices to promote learning on cable jointing.
