Abstract

The paper examined the 1849 catholic education ordinance's role in shaping sustainable teacher development and students’ assessment in the 21st century. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprises 625 teachers in 25 catholic secondary schools in the FCT, Abuja. A sample of 112 teachers was selected from 5 schools using a cluster sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a structured 10-item questionnaire named the Questionnaire on catholic education Ordinances ' Role in Shaping Sustainable Educational Practices (QOCEORSEP). The instrument was subjected to face and content validity by experts in research, as well as measurement and evaluation. Scores arising from the scrutiny of the experts yielded a validity index of 0.74. The instrument was further subjected to a pilot study. The instruments were pilot tested on 20 teachers; the respondents were part of the population but not part of the sample for this study. The data obtained from the pilot test was used to compute the internal consistency of the instrument using Cronbach’s Alpha reliability method. Results obtained from the exercise were used to obtain a reliability index of 0.77 for the questionnaire. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions developed for the study, while t-test statistics were used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study showed there is a significant influence of the ordinance's role of 1849 catholic education in shaping sustainable teacher development in the 21st century, and there is a significant influence of the ordinance's role of 1849 catholic education in shaping sustainable students’ assessment in the 21st century. The study recommended that Schools should be equipped through workshops and seminars on the importance of the ordinance role to enhance sustainable teacher development, and the Ordinance role should be implemented to improve sustainable student assessment in schools
