Abstract

From the inception of democracy in 1999, Nigeria has experienced plethora of leadership failures, hence the study focuses on the “Political Leadership and Development of the south East Nigeria. The study adopted the purposive sampling technique in selecting the sample for the study. Data collected were presented and analyzed using frequency, percentage and chi-square (χ^2) analytical tools. The study revealed that political leadership had a significant positive effect on human capital development in South East, Nigeria (t, 95, n = 600, tcal value 9.798>2.05 tcrit, pv .000). That sectional interest is among the challenges to good political leadership as an instrument for sustainable development in South East, Nigeria (t, 95, n = 600, tcal value 9.139>2.05 tcrit, pv .000). The study made some recommendations based on these findings. It was recommended that political leaders should set up an effective organ for monitoring and evaluating the human capital development of our people through combination of resource both outside and within the country. Political organizations should put up mechanism to check sectional interest as a challenge to good political leadership as an instrument for sustainable development.
