Abstract

The study focused on the “Assessment of the Military Strategic Communication and Effective use of Social Media in the Fight Against Banditry in Nigeria “. The study had three objectives for data collection. The objectives were to; ascertain the most frequent social media platform used by Nigerian citizens to access information on banditry activities in Nigeria, determine the frequency of military strategic engagements with Nigerian citizens on the activities of bandits via social media platforms and lastly, investigate the effectiveness of the military strategic communication on social media platforms in tackling information on banditry activities in Nigeria. The study adopted Diffusion of Innovation Theory and Framing Theory as theoretical Framework for the study. The study found that the most frequent social media platform used by Nigerian citizens is Facebook. The finding also showed that the military strategic communication on social media platforms is not frequent and finally, the study revealed that the military strategic communication on social media reportage on the activities of bandits is not effective. The study concluded that the military strategic communication and the use of social media platforms need proper overhaul otherwise, what is happening now is below the expectations of Nigerian citizens and this may cause total loss of trust in the military apparatus
