ASSESSMENT OF HOUSING DESIGN STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF SLUM RESIDENTS IN ENUGU METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

Slum residents face an array of debilitating problems such as poor housing structures, lack of access to improved water source, improved sanitation facilities, sufficient living area and security of tenure, functional drainage system, access roads and health facilities amongst others. This study focused on assessing the housing design strategy for improving the living conditions of slum residents in Enugu metropolis, Nigeria. The study was guided by the following specific objectives; to identify the current housing design challenges militating against slum development as they affect affordability, accessibility and sustainability, in Enugu metropolis, to establish a linkage between poor government housing policy and the deplorable living conditions of slum residents. The population of the study covered 1634 respondents. A sample size of 321 was gotten through Taro Yamane formula. The findings of the study reveals that current housing design challenges militating against slum development in Enugu metropolis are; Affordability of housing project, Sustainable and smart design, Urban planning and zoning regulations, Lack of community inclusive in design, Poor slum upgrading programs, Lack of manpower development, Building material affordability, Poor building regulations, Corruption and bad governance and Poor allocation to housing structure. The result further indicates that government housing policy  has negative relationship on the living conditions of slum residents in Enugu metropolis such that an increase in government housing policy will lead to decrease in the deplorable living conditions of slum residents in Enugu metropolis  on the average. The study recommends that there is need for an improved housing policy that is capable of relieving the residents of Enugu metropolis from slums which can be achieved through direct increased in the budget allocated to residential building in the location.
